Matthias Mansen, Weibliche Gesten

Matthias Mansen was born in Ravensburg in 1958. From 1978 to 1984 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. Since then he has worked almost exclusively in the medium of woodcut. Mansen is not interested in reproducing already existing motifs or images, but in developing complex images in a large number of variations. His serial investigations into the image update a traditional medium, the woodcut, as well as traditional genres, such as landscape. Before the viewer's eye appears an image that always refers to the conditions of its creation - fragments of reality made of light and shadow. At the Kunstverein Bretten, the artist shows works on communicative signals from the series "Female Gestures" and "Trieste or the Gods".
