Holz. Skulptur, Relief und Arbeiten auf Papier
Seven artists that are represent with large groups of artworks in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Reutlingen receive a forum for their tangible engagement with art on two floors of the Spendhaus: The material used in all of the works is wood, be it for three-dimensional objects or woodcuts. Since the early history of mankind, wood has been used as a material for building houses, producing everyday objects or sculptures: ultimately, woodworking is one of the oldest human craft techniques. With regard to the easy-to-work material and the subject of representation, the figure dominates in the history of sculpture, while in relief print it is the drawing cut in wood as well as words in which the world of images and content are told. The Kunstmuseum Reutlingen has numerous woodcuts and printing blocks, but donations of three-dimensional art have also enriched the collection over time. After all, it is the scholarships and prizes of the Kunstmuseum that support contemporary artists and bring current artistic positions into the collection. The exhibition “Wood. Sculpture, relief and works on paper” is compiled from the collection of the Kunstmuseum. Artworks by Martine Andernach, Felix Droese, Matthias Mansen, Olaf Metzel / Ulrich Görlich, Rolf Wicker and Christian Wulffen will be shown. The haptic, spatial and visual presence of wood is the starting point for the comparison of different artistic approaches in which aesthetic, socio-political or perception-oriented questions become visible.
