Matthias Mansen (* 1958 in Ravensburg), studied 1978–1984 at the Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe. Having lived and worked in London, Paris and New York, he has been based in Berlin since 1994. In his large scale series of woodcuts, Mansen investigates how images come into being. In a traditional technique, he explores genres such as landscape, cityscape and the human figure - fragments of reality in light and shade. Since 2006 he has been working on the "Berlin-Cycles“: Berlin-Tiergarten (2006–2008) reflects the ephemeral appearances of the park during the changing seasons, Potsdamer Straße (2012) depicts elements of the architectural and urban textures.
