Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

"Woodcut. 1400 to Today" kicks off a new series of exhibitions at the Kupferstichkabinett, each presenting an artistic printing technique. Using over 100 works of art on paper - including masterpieces by Albrecht Dürer, Edvard Munch or Käthe Kollwitz - the development of the technique is traced from its beginnings to the present day. The exhibition also focuses on materials and special characteristics.

"A comparable perceptual experience is shared by the viewers of Matthias Mansen's large-format woodcuts from the series Potsdamer Straße (Cat. 102), which consists of 7 parts in total. When viewed up close, only an abstract pattern is discernible, which transforms into a representational motif as the distance increases: Windows, doors, facades and architectural details, lanterns, churches of the area around Potsdamer Straße in Berlin become visible, so that the viewers themselves become strollers on light-flooded streets. In addition to the Potsdamer Strasse prints (A-G), the print plates of the entire series are also in the Kupferstichkabinett as a closed collection. These woodblocks, once floorboards and timbers from Potsdamer Strasse apartments, are no longer used for printing."
